CQOD: 09/17/07 -- Denney: the double action of love

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 17, 2007
Feast of Hildegard, Abbess of Bingen, Visionary, 1179
Meditation:
If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself.
    -- 2 Timothy 2:13 (KJV)

Quotation:
“He cannot deny Himself” [II Tim. 2:13], means at the same time He cannot deny His grace to the sinful, and He cannot deny the moral order in which alone He can live in fellowship with men; and we see the inviolableness of both asserted in the death of Jesus. Nothing else in the world demonstrates how real is God’s love to the sinful, and how real the sin of the world is to God. And the love which comes to us through such an expression, bearing sin in all its reality, yet loving us through and beyond it, is the only love which at once forgives and regenerates the soul.
... James Denney (1856-1917), The Atonement and the Modern Mind [1903]

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, You have borne the penalty for my sin.

CQOD: 09/16/07 -- Brooks: laboring in prayer

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 16, 2007
Feast of Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage, Martyr, 258
Commemoration of Ninian, Bishop of Galloway, Apostle to the Picts, c. 430
Commemoration of Edward Bouverie Pusey, Priest, tractarian, 1882
Meditation:
... and the ransomed of the LORD will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.
    -- Isaiah 35:10 (NIV)

Quotation:
Do not pray for easy lives; pray to be stronger men. Do not pray for tasks equal to your powers; pray for powers equal to your tasks. Then the doing of your work shall be no miracle, but you yourself shall be a miracle. Every day you shall wonder at yourself, at the richness of life which has come to you by the grace of God.
    ... Phillips Brooks (1835-1893)

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, each day with You is richer than the one before.

CQOD: 09/15/07 -- Kirk: between the times

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 15, 2007
Meditation:
He who testifies to these things says, "Yes, I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.
    -- Revelation 22:22 (NIV)

Quotation:
We are living “between the times”—the time of Christ’s resurrection and the new age of the Spirit, and the time of fulfillment in Christ. Life in the Spirit is a pledge, a “down-payment,” on the final kingdom of shalom. In the meantime, we are to be signs of the kingdom which is, and which is coming.
    ... David Kirk (b.1935)

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, Your return is our message and our hope.

CQOD: 09/14/07 -- Baillie: Teach me, O God

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 14, 2007
Feast of the Holy Cross
Meditation:
Show me your ways, O LORD, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.
    -- Psalm 25:4,5 (NIV)

Quotation:
Teach me. O God, to use all the circumstances of my life to-day that they may bring forth in me the fruits of holiness rather than the fruits of sin. Let me use disappointment as material for patience: Let me use success as material for thankfulness: Let me use suspense as material for perseverance: Let me use danger as material for courage: Let me use reproach as material for longsuffering: Let me use praise as material for humility: Let me use pleasures as material for temperance: Let me use pains as material for endurance.
... John Baillie (1886-1960), A Diary of Private Prayer [1949]

Quiet time reflection:
May the day come soon, Lord, when my conversion to Your way is complete.

CQOD: 09/13/07 -- St. John Chrysostom: church attendance

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 13, 2007
Feast of John Chrysostom, Bishop of Constantinople, Teacher, 407
Meditation:
Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.
    -- Psalm 19:14 (KJV)

Quotation:
We assemble not in the church to pass away the time, but to gain some great benefit for our souls. If therefore we depart without profit, our zeal in frequenting the church will prove our condemnation. That so great a judgment comes not upon you, when ye go hence ponder the things ye have heard, and exercise yourselves in confirming our instruction—friend with friend, fathers with their children, masters with their slaves—so that, when ye return hither and hear from us the same counsels, ye may not be ashamed, but rejoice and be glad in the conviction that ye have put into practice the greater part of our exhortation. Not only must we meditate upon these things here—for this short exhortation sufficeth not to eradicate the evil—but at home let the husband be reminded of them by the wife, and the wife by the husband, and let an emulation obtain in families to the fulfillment of the divine law.
    ... John Chrysostom (345?-407)

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, keep sin from overwhelming the goodness taught to me from Your Word.

CQOD: 09/12/07 -- Stott: the devil hates the Gospel

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 12, 2007
Meditation:
Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself. Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
    -- 2 Timothy 2:11-14 (NIV)

Quotation:
The world’s opposition is strong and subtle. And behind these things stands the devil, bent on ‘taking men alive’ and keeping them prisoner. For the devil hates the gospel and uses all his strength and cunning to obstruct its progress, now by perverting it in the mouths of those who preach it, now by frightening them into silence through persecution or ridicule, now by persuading them to advanced beyond it into some fancy novelty, now by making them so busy with defending the gospel that they have no time to proclaim it.
... John Stott, “The Message of 2 Timothy”, The Bible Speaks Today, 126 [1973]

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, give me the wit to stay on message.

CQOD: 09/11/07 -- Stevenson: prayer for a family

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 11, 2007
Meditation:
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
    -- Hebrews 13:5-8 (NIV)

Quotation:
Lord, behold our family here assembled. We thank Thee for this place in which we dwell; for the love that unites us; for the peace accorded us this day; for the hope with which we expect the morrow; for the health, the work, the food, and the bright skies that make our lives delightful; for our friends in all parts of the earth, and our friendly helpers in this foreign isle [Samoa]... Give us courage, gaiety, and the quiet mind. Spare to us our friends, soften to us our enemies. Bless us, if it may be, in all our innocent endeavors. If it may not be, give us the strength to encounter that which is to come, that we be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temperate in wrath, and in all changes of fortune and down to the gates of death, loyal and loving to one another.
    ... Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)

Quiet time reflection:
    Lord, I rest in You.

CQOD: 09/10/07 -- Palau: evangelism

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 10, 2007
Meditation:
Peter and the other apostles replied: "We must obey God rather than men! The God of our fathers raised Jesus from the dead--whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree. God exalted him to his own right hand as Prince and Savior that he might give repentance and forgiveness of sins to Israel. We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him."
    -- Acts 5:29-32 (NIV)

Quotation:
Evangelism is not an option for the Christian life.
    ... Luis Palau (b.1934)

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, let me not fear to be sent.

CQOD: 09/09/07 -- Newman: prayer of dedication

Christian Quotation of the Day

September 9, 2007
Meditation:
Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written: "'I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.' But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."
    -- Matthew 26:31,32 (NIV)

Quotation:
Make me what Thou wouldst have me. I bargain for nothing. I make no terms. I seek for no previous information whither Thou art taking me. I will be what Thou wilt make me, and all that Thou wilt make me. I say not, I will follow Thee whithersoever Thou goest, for I am weak, but I give myself to Thee, to lead me anywhither.
    ... John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

Quiet time reflection:
    Lord, I hear Your call.
