CQOD: 01/27/06 -- Paton: God's will in Christian missions

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 27, 2006
Meditation:
This was according to the eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in him.
    -- Eph. 3:12 (ESV)

Quotation:
The Christian Mission is thus anchored in dogma, is a result of what ordinary Christians believe. It is God’s plan, God’s activity; but because God became man and took up manhood into Himself, it is God’s will embodied in active obedience on the part of the Christian individual, the Christian group within the Church, and the Christian Church as a whole—we are all involved in it, all of us, in our various callings.
... David M. Paton (b.1913), Christian Missions and the Judgment of God [1953]

Quiet time reflection:
Show me what I must do, Lord, for _____ and _____, to bring them to knowledge of Your Kingdom.

CQOD: 01/26/06 -- Paton: the mystery of Christian missions

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 26, 2006
Feast of Timothy and Titus, Companions of PaulCommemoration of Dorothy Kerin, Founder of the Burrswood Healing Community, 1963
Meditation:
To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.
    -- Eph. 3:8-11 (ESV)

Quotation:
The Christian Mission is what the New Testament calls a ‘mystery’. It is what St. Paul calls the mystery—a secret hidden within God even before the creation of the world, but now made known to men and women of faith, whereby all nations are to be gathered up and presented to God through Jesus Christ. This gathering up takes place in the Church, the mystical Body of Christ. The mystery has been unfolded according to a divine plan; prepared by the vocation of the Jewish people; and substantially realized by the mission of the Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ, who by His Ascension introduced human nature for all eternity into the sphere of the life of the Divine Trinity: and this plan is to be accomplished among the various peoples of the world, during the time between Pentecost and the Second Coming.
... David M. Paton (b.1913), Christian Missions and the Judgment of God [1953]

Quiet time reflection:
I bow before Your divine plan, Lord.

CQOD: 01/25/06 -- Temple: the life of faith

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 25, 2006
Feast of the Conversion of Paul
Meditation:
We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
    -- Romans 6:4 (ESV)

Quotation:
The life of faith does not earn eternal life: it is eternal life. And Christ is its vehicle.
    ... William Temple (1881-1944)

Quiet time reflection:
Praise to you, Lord Jesus, for Your greatest gift!

CQOD: 01/24/06 -- de Sales: devotion to our calling

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 24, 2006
Feast of François de Sales, Bishop of Geneva, Teacher, 1622
Meditation:
For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
    -- Romans 12:4-8 (ESV)

Quotation:
Our business is to love what God would have us do. He wills our vocation as it is: let us love that, and not trifle away our time in hankering after other people’s vocation.
    ... François de Sales (1567-1622)

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, grant me peace about my calling, and teach me to trust you in the calling of others.

CQOD: 01/23/06 -- Brooks: the revelation of a Person

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 23, 2006
Commemoration of Phillips Brooks, Bishop of Massachusetts, spiritual writer, 1893
Meditation:
Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
    -- Hebrews 1:1-4 (ESV)

Quotation:
If the true revelation of God is in Christ, the Bible is not properly a revelation, but the History of a Revelation. This is not only a Fact but a necessity, for a Person cannot be revealed in a Book, but must find revelation, if at all, in a Person.
... Phillips Brooks (1835-1893), The Law of Growth [1902]

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, show me more of Yourself in Scripture.

CQOD: 01/22/06 -- Hammarskjöld: the everyday commitment

Christian Quotation of the Day

January 22, 2006
Meditation:
Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.
    -- Philippians 3:17 (ESV)

Quotation:
The “great commitment” is so much easier than the ordinary, everyday one—and can all too easily shut our hearts to the latter. A willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice can be associated with, and even produce, a great hardness of heart.
    ... Dag Hammarskjöld (1905-1961), Markings, p. 131 [1964]

Quiet time reflection:
Lord, open my eyes to the small services You call me to do.
