CQOD: 05/12/07 -- Augustine: God is not deceiver
Christian Quotation of the Day
May 12, 2007Commemoration of Aiden Wilson Tozer, spiritual writer, 1963
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.
-- Psalm 46:1-3 (ESV)
Quotation:
God is not a deceiver, that he should offer to support us, and then, when we lean upon Him, should slip away from us.
... St. Augustine (354-430)
Quiet time reflection:
Lord, through faith, I know that I can rely on You.

This short little quote is packed with truth. There is so much worry, fear, anxiety over our 'uncertain' futures because we do not take God at His word. And then when we are finally ready to lean on Him, we hear this little voice that intones, "Go ahead, start leaning on Him. But He might need to teach you a lesson by letting you fall hard. And once you start falling, who is to say how far you will fall! So go ahead, take the risk...if you dare. Or you can just keep standing on these two legs of yours."
There is the deception--we are told to be self-sufficient and that will carry us through.
But the whole time, if we would just take God at His word (He is not a deceiver, right?) we would know that He will always do what is good for us.
Dear Ben,
That is a powerful statement: "There is the deception--we are told to be self-sufficient and that will carry us through."
Yes, that is the lie. That is our culture speaking to us, and that lie will cheat us all in the end.
Bless you for your remarks.
